Bauchi Polytechnic Students Rally Against Rising Crime

Students of Federal Polytechnic Bauchi residing in the Gwallameji community took to the streets on Tuesday to protest against the escalating incidents of armed robberies and rapes in their area. The demonstrators blocked the federal highway along Bauchi-Dass Road, expressing their frustration and demanding better security.

According to a statement released by the Bauchi State Police Command, the protest was triggered by a recent incident where a group of criminals broke into a student residence and attacked Cletus Chomo, a 50-year-old resident of Sarauniya Lodge. Chomo was injured during the robbery, further intensifying the students’ grievances.

In response to the situation, the police deployed officers from the ‘E’ Division and tactical units to restore order. “One of the victims who was stabbed was promptly taken to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital for medical attention and is currently responding to treatment, contrary to unsubstantiated reports suggesting otherwise,” the police statement clarified.

The police urged parents and guardians to actively guide their children and wards, emphasizing that any attempts to disrupt public peace and safety in the state would not be tolerated. Additionally, Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Auwal Mohammed, directed all area commanders and divisional police officers to enhance security measures and apprehend those involved in criminal activities.

The police reaffirmed their commitment to combating crime and called on citizens to support their efforts by reporting any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.

The students’ protest in Gwallameji underscores the growing concerns over the increasing crime rates in the area, leaving many residents, especially students, feeling vulnerable and unsafe.
