The Federal Government has announced the establishment of centers across the country where Nigerians can purchase a 50kg bag of rice for ₦40,000, as part of efforts to alleviate economic hardships.
This was disclosed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a briefing following the Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja, on Monday.
Idris emphasized that the initiative is among several measures by the Tinubu administration to improve living conditions for citizens, and called for calm regarding the proposed nationwide protest.
“The Federal Executive Council believes that many of the demands from the protesters are already being addressed by the government, making the protests unnecessary,” Idris stated. “This administration listens and acts on the concerns of its people. The President has taken steps that align with the protesters’ requests.”
Highlighting recent government actions, Idris mentioned the distribution of 740 trucks of grains to states and the availability of 50kg bags of rice at designated centers nationwide for ₦40,000.
“Twenty trucks of grains were allocated to each state governor for distribution to the most vulnerable citizens,” Idris explained. “Additionally, rice is being sold at about 50% of its usual cost. Ten trucks of rice per state have been provided initially, and more interventions are planned.”
He also noted that food prices are expected to decrease with the ongoing rainy season and increased agricultural investments.
The minister cited other relief efforts, such as the student loan scheme and the upcoming disbursement of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) kits, aimed at reducing transportation costs. He acknowledged logistical challenges in rolling out the CNG buses but assured that progress is being made.
“Some CNG buses and conversion kits are already available, and conversion centers are becoming operational,” Idris said. “Although there have been delays, these steps are necessary to ensure a smooth transition from fossil fuels to renewables, ultimately reducing transportation costs by over 60%.”
Idris concluded by urging patience and cooperation from the public, emphasizing the government’s commitment to addressing their needs and improving overall living conditions.
