The Kaduna State Government has announced a ban on protests that have not received clearance from security agencies, following violent incidents that resulted in the loss of lives and destruction of property in the state.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Samuel Aruwan, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, emphasized that the recent demonstrations in Kaduna and Zaria on August 1st and 5th were exploited by criminals who used the opportunity to loot, vandalize, and terrorize innocent citizens. The government warned that it would no longer tolerate any unauthorized protests, citing concerns over public safety and security.
“The events of August 1st and 5th serve as clear evidence that criminal elements are disguising themselves as protesters to further an agenda aimed at destabilizing the state,” the statement read. “The Kaduna State Government and security agencies will not allow such anti-state activities to go unchecked.”
Aruwan reiterated that while the government acknowledges the constitutional rights of citizens to freedom of expression and lawful assembly, any procession that has not been verified by the appropriate authorities remains prohibited. He further disclosed that intelligence reports indicate that these criminal elements are recruiting vulnerable individuals, including children, to carry out their plans.
In response to the escalating tensions, the Kaduna State Security Council, led by Governor Uba Sani, has reviewed the security situation and maintained the existing curfew from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. The government warned that those seeking to incite unrest under the guise of protest will face severe consequences.
Citizens were urged to adhere to the curfew and report any suspicious activities to the state’s Security Operations Room using the provided hotlines.
