President Bola Tinubu has approved a new national minimum wage of N70,000 for Nigerian workers. The President also committed to reviewing the national minimum wage law every three years to ensure it remains fair and relevant.
President Tinubu made this announcement during a meeting with leaders of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja on Thursday. This marks the second meeting between the parties within a week.
Senior presidential aide, Bayo Onanuga shared the information on his verified X handle on Thursday.
Onanuga said in addition to the minimum wage approval, President Tinubu also pledged to explore ways to support the private sector and regional governments in meeting the new wage standard.
According to the aide, the labour leaders praised President Tinubu for his considerate approach.
“Furthermore, the President promised to use his discretionary powers to address the demands of university unions seeking payment of unpaid salaries for the past four months”, Onanuga said.
