The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has emphasised the crucial role of women in spearheading the nation’s Food Security Campaign.
Speaking at the State House Residence during the unveiling of her vegetable garden, Senator Tinubu encouraged women to participate in the Every Home A Garden Competition, aimed at promoting self-sufficiency through home gardening.
The First Lady has cultivated seven types of vegetables, including spinach, waterleaf, bitter leaf, Ewedu, lemongrass, scent leaf, and okra.
She highlighted that even a small garden can significantly contribute to alleviating food insufficiency. “This garden will provide healthy vegetables for my household, and I will be able to share some with my staff. Every individual’s effort is crucial in solving the food security issue.
As a leader, I must set an example by planting my own garden,” she said.
Senator Tinubu urged first-time women farmers across Nigeria to participate in the competition by planting gardens sufficient to feed their families and neighbors.
“This initiative will enhance communal living and support the Federal Government’s food security campaign. The vegetables are medicinal, and my garden serves as an example for other women to embrace smart gardening,” she added.
During the event, the First Lady showcased her garden to Chioma Uzodinma, Wife of the Imo State Governor, and Mrs. Aisha Matawale, Wife of the Minister of State for Defence.
The Every Home A Garden Competition is open to first-time women farmers nationwide.
Participants are required to submit a 30-second video entry with their details to the Office of the Wives of the State Government by September 25, 2024. The winner will receive N25 million.
