At least 19 civilians have lost their lives, and numerous others have been injured in a suicide bombing in Kawuri village, located in the Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State. Kawuri is approximately 50 kilometers from Maiduguri, situated on the Maiduguri-Konduga-Bama Road.
This tragic event occurred shortly after another fatal incident in the state. Just 24 hours prior, Shettima Mustapha, an accountant with the Local Education Authority in Damboa, was killed when his vehicle hit an improvised explosive device (IED) on the Maiduguri-Damboa-Biu highway, injuring several others.
In a separate incident a month ago, multiple suicide bombings in Gwoza Local Government Area resulted in 32 deaths and over 100 injuries.
Security agencies have advised the public to avoid gatherings due to the heightened risk. Last week, terrorists attacked a police station in Jakana, near Maiduguri, killing a police driver and his alleged girlfriend, destroying two patrol vehicles, and stealing motorcycles, arms, and ammunition.
A local source reported: “There were mysterious bomb blasts at a mini market in Kawuri around 8 p.m., leaving over 19 people dead and many injured. The injured have been taken to an undisclosed hospital in Maiduguri for treatment. The community is now left in fear and uncertainty.”
Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Daso, for confirmation were unsuccessful. However, a local stakeholder confirmed the incident and urged the government and security agencies to address the increasing insurgent attacks.
